The Struggle to Keep Moving

Plantar fasciitis is a common inflammation of the tissue connecting your heel to your toes. This condition can turn even a simple walk into a painful challenge. Walking with it often feels like a sharp, burning sensation deep in the heel, particularly after sitting or first getting out of bed. The pain can cause you to change your gait, which can lead to knee or back issues. The body struggles to repair the inflamed tissue while under constant stress from walking. To help yourself, choose supportive footwear with good arch support, even around the house. Avoid old, worn out shoes and running on hard surfaces. Stretching your calves and feet multiple times a day is also important for reducing tension. If you have consistent heel pain, it is suggested that you seek a proper diagnosis and treatment from a podiatrist.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM  from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Exploring Outcomes of Bunion Surgery

Bunions, also called hallux valgus, can sometimes cause pain and changes in the way the foot functions. When a bunion becomes severe, surgery may be the most effective treatment to restore comfort and mobility. The aim of bunion surgery is to realign the bones of the big toe, reduce pain, improve stability, and lower the risk of further complications, such as hammer toes or arthritis. Surgery may involve repositioning the metatarsal and toe bones, adjusting tendons and ligaments, and fixing the corrected bones in place with screws or plates. In some cases, minimally invasive procedures may be considered, while more advanced bunions may require a more extensive correction. Recovery often involves a period of limited activity while the bones heal. A podiatrist can determine the most suitable surgical option and guide you through the healing process. If you have a painful bunion, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and treatment.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM of Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Zumba is a fun way to stay active, but its fast footwork and sudden movements can lead to ankle sprains or fractures. Sprains occur when ligaments stretch beyond their limit, while fractures happen from direct impact or awkward landings. Prevention starts with wearing the right shoes that provide cushioning and ankle support. Avoiding crowded classes reduces the chance of accidental collisions. A proper warm-up and cool-down improve flexibility, and staying hydrated helps muscles and joints perform safely. A podiatrist can evaluate ankle health, provide treatment for injuries, and guide a safe return to activity. If you have ankle pain from Zumba, it is suggested that you promptly schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can offer you relief and treatment solutions, enabling your return to this popular activity.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Diabetic Neuropathy and Foot Health

Diabetic neuropathy is a condition that occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the nerves, most commonly in the feet and legs. Causes include prolonged uncontrolled diabetes, poor circulation, and nerve inflammation. Symptoms may involve tingling, burning, numbness, or sharp pain that can worsen at night. Risk factors include duration of diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, and being overweight. This condition increases the chance of foot injuries, ulcers, and infections because loss of sensation makes it harder to notice problems early. A podiatrist can help by monitoring foot health, treating complications, and providing guidance on protective care. If you have diabetes and have symptoms of foot neuropathy, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to find relief, and manage this serious condition.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.
