An Infected Blister

Blisters form when the skin is injured and are the body’s way of protecting itself from further damage. A blister is a bubble of fluid that collects to cushion the injury so the underlying skin can heal. Blisters show up on the feet when there is friction from shoes. If a blister breaks, bacteria can enter the wound and an infection can develop. This can be painful and dangerous if left untreated. Sepsis, or an infection can enter the bloodstream and be life-threatening. Most blisters are tender or painful when they occur but when one is infected, it is more apt to be warm, have oozing pus, have a foul smell, and be swollen. If you have a blister that appears to be infected, bleeds when you touch it, or does not seem to be healing, it is suggested you contact a podiatrist for an examination and proper treatment.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM of Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

How Long Can Gout Last?

Severe pain, swelling, and redness surrounding the joint in the big toe can be indicative gout. It is a form of arthritis, and it can come from genetic factors or from eating foods that are high in purine levels. Elevated levels of purine can produce uric acid, and form crystals that can build up in the joints of the big toe. Some foods that have large amounts of purines include red meat, shellfish, and drinks that are made with large amounts of sugar. Additionally, people who are overweight, have high blood pressure, or who are diabetic may be prone to getting gout. This condition occurs in flare-ups and can last up to a week. Chronic gout may cause loss of mobility and joint damage. There are effective preventative methods that may help to control the onset of gout. These can consist of incorporating a healthy diet into your daily routine, performing simple exercise programs, and maintaining an acceptable weight. If you suffer from gout, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you with additional prevention and treatment options.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

The Dangers of Wearing Flip Flops

Many people enjoy wearing flip-flops during the warmer months. Their various colors and exemption of laces can make these types of shoes tempting to slip into. Research has indicated, however, that there may be some drawbacks to wearing flip-flops. Patients who frequently wear them may experience foot and ankle pain, in addition to walking differently. This may be a direct result of the flip-flops having no arch and little to no support. The toes must also work harder to keep these shoes on the feet. Additionally, flip-flop wearers often take shorter steps, and this can cause more stress to the overall body. Heel pain is also a common ailment among flip-flop wearers. Flip-flops generally have a thin sole and are backless, which can lead to the development of cracked heels. If you would like more information about the dangers of wearing flip-flops, please consult a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, FL .  We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Swollen Feet During Pregnancy Is Normal

Many pregnant women experience swelling of the feet and this is a normal symptom of pregnancy. It is a condition that is referred to as edema and it can cause the patient to be uncomfortable. This is a result of the added weight that is gained during pregnancy, in addition to the blood becoming thicker during this gestation period. Gravity can cause extra fluid in the body to pool in the feet and the shoes that are worn daily may become uncomfortable to wear. The need to drink water increases during pregnancy and the feet may be affected if not enough water is ingested. Research has indicated that 1 in 25 women will experience preeclampsia during pregnancy which will cause the feet to become swollen. Relief can come from frequently elevating the feet and it can help to refrain from overheating. If you have questions about swollen feet during pregnancy please consult with a podiatrist who can address any concerns you may have.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
